Watauga Valley Fife & Drum Corps

Saturdays

10:00 am – 12 pm

The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications, and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming!

 

History at Home Summer Ranger Programs                                                                

June – August

A creative mix of historical & natural programs presented throughout the summer by our Seasonal Interpretive Rangers Jessica Newell and Stuart Shelton. These programs are great for the whole family to enjoy! Please call for weekly schedules.

 

14th Annual Elizabethton Butterfly Count

Meet naturalist Don Holt at Sycamore Shoals for this day-long winged adventure across town. Come for all or part of the day. Sponsored by the North American Butterfly Association & Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. (Rain Date to be announced).

 

Fall Gardening

It’s not too early to be planning & building your spring garden. Gardener extraordinaire, Ben Hunter, will be joining us to share his experiences & techniques for growing the garden of your dreams!  Sponsored by the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardeners.

This gathering of spinners and fiber artists is open to anyone interested in the art of spinning. Join us at 9:30 am on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (April to November).

  

Learn to Play the Pennywhistle

Cost: $25(includes Clarke or Walton pennywhistle in Key of D, book, and CD)

$15 if you bring your own instrument

Popular in the British Isles in the 1800’s, this class includes the fundamentals of holding and sounding your pennywhistle, learning the first notes, and playing a song—or come and advance the skills you already possess. Music and other supplemental materials provided.

 

Watauga Valley Art League Meeting and Program

Everyone is welcome to join the Watauga Valley Art League for their monthly meetings that feature a guest speakers and fellowship with area artists. WVAL meets the 2nd Sunday of each month, except October.

Have a sewing machine but don’t know how to use it? This class will teach you basic machine operations (Embroidery machines and sergers are not included). Please bring – Sewing machine, sewing machine manual and accessories , small scissors. Instructor brings fabric & thread.

 

Basketry – Candy Jar Basket

Learn how to weave over a jar, making a beautiful and functional piece! It has a wood base and a wood lid.  Choice of colors offered.  Dimensions: approx. 4″w x 6″h. .  Bring garden or kitchen shears, an old hand towel, pencil,  small measuring tape, small spray bottle of water, and strong clothespins.

 

 

Old Time Music Jam – Led by Art Lang

Enjoy the rich musical traditions of our region each month. Old time musicians of all levels are welcome. Don’t play and instrument? Come on over, kick back, and enjoy the tunes!
