Watauga Valley Fife and Drum Corps

1st and 3rd Saturdays

10am – Noon

The Watauga Valley Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications, and parades. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary, just come with a willingness to learn.

 

29th Year in 2019!  Sycamore Shoals Native American Festival

Saturday & Sunday, June 1 and 2

10:00 am – 6:00 pm

Admission Charge: Adults- $6; Ages 7 to 17 – $1.00; 6 & under – Free

A two-day celebration of our Native American heritage!  Award-winning dancers, storytellers, artists, and scholars gather at the circle to share knowledge and demonstrate their skills.  Come and discover Native American arts, music, and legends, with an emphasis on the Cherokee culture.

 

Sabine Hill Social Society Annual Gathering  

Sunday, June 9

2:30 pm – 4 pm

Whether you are a member of the Sabine Hill Social Society or are interested in learning more about our Friends of Sycamore Shoals supported group, you are invited to join us! From 2:30 pm- 4 pm you will have the opportunity to learn early 19th century dance, (no experience required,) and Period Card Games! This event will take place at the park’s picnic shelters.

 

Watauga Valley Art League Meeting and Program

This monthly meeting is open to all!  Each month a unique program is planned that ranges from talks, to demos, to hands on projects.

 

Ranger Led Bike Ride

Wednesday, June 12

Join Ranger Davis for a ranger led bike ride up the Tweetsie Trail to the Elizabethton Covered Bridge, then back to the park via the Elizabethton Linear Trail. Total loop will be about 6 miles and take approximately one hour depending on the average ability level of the attending participants.  Portions of the route will not be suitable for pull behind child carriers.  Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring your own water.  Program will be cancelled/rescheduled in the event of severely inclement weather. Cash payments must be made at the park office during regular operating hours prior to registration cut-off date.

 

Tomahawk Throwing Workshop

Master the unique frontier skill of tomahawk throwing by joining Ranger Jason Davis for a hands-on tutorial.  Topics will include proper technique and release, as well as versatile applications of tomahawk use in the outdoors. No children younger than 12. Parents who wish to be present but not participate do not need to register. Please dress appropriately for the weather.  Bring your own gloves and water, all other supplies will be provided. Cash payments must be made at the park office during regular operating hours prior to registration cut-off date.

 

Fishing with a Ranger!

Join Ranger Hayslett along the banks of the Watauga to see what fishy friends we may find! We will be fishing from the bank so no waders will be necessary. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear close toed shoes. Necessary equipment and licensure is required. 13 years or younger do not require a fishing license! Meet at the terminus of the riverfront trail. Cash payments must be made at the park office during regular operating hours prior to registration cut-off date.

 

Banjos through Time

Hear first-hand the way the banjo transformed from a rhythm instrument of natural materials to a melodic machine. Join Ranger Hayslett at the historic Sabine Hill home and hear sounds of two hundred years’ worth of banjo music ring through one our region’s most unique historic homes. Cash payments must be made at the park office during regular operating hours prior to registration cut-off date.


Workshop:   Flint Knapping – Making Stone Tools                                   

Instructors: Bob Estep & Friends

Saturday & Sunday, June 22 & 23

10 am – 4 pm

Cost: $110 (includes 2 days of instruction, flint knapping kit & stone – yours to keep!)

Max:  12

Make stone tools such as the arrow point using only traditional techniques. Please be sure to register no later than 1 week prior to the class.  Adults only.

 

Old Time Music Jam – Led by Art Lang

Enjoy the rich musical traditions of our region each month.  Old time musicians of all levels are welcome.  Don’t play and instrument?  Come on over, kick back, and enjoy the tunes!

 

Independence on the Frontier: Militia Muster at Fort Watauga

Experience Independence, 18th century-style!  What did colonists think about a new nation?  Be a guest in Fort Watauga as news of Independence arrives to the colonial frontier.  Walk among historical characters and hear their varied reactions to the Declaration, from fear of war to the hope of a brighter future. Special public reading of the Declaration of Independence each day!

Our Visitors Center is closed on most State holidays.

Park grounds are open from dawn until dusk.

In the event of extremely inclement winter weather, contact the park about program cancelations and park office closings.
