Join Park Staff for a tour of Tennessee’s oldest frame house! Discover the secrets of this elegant frontier home and learn the history of the family who built it between 1775 and 1780.  

The John and Landon Carter Mansion is located at 1031 Broad Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643 

Accessibility to the home includes steps and an interior staircase.

Sabine Hill Tours

Join Park Ranger Cory Franklin for a guided tour of this stately home built by Mary Patton Taylor, widow of Brigadier General Nathaniel Taylor. The site has been described as one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the State of Tennessee. During your tour you will have the opportunity to take in the colorful and architecturally detailed interior while learning about the influential Taylor family who called Sabine Hill home in the early 19th century. 

Sabine Hill is located at 2328 West G Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643 

Please note, only portable toilet facilities are available at this time. Accessibility to the home includes steps and an interior staircase.

Ranger Led Bike Ride

Join Ranger Davis for a ranger led bike ride from the park, up the Elizabethton Linear Trail to the Covered Bridge, then back to the park via the Tweetsie Trail. Total loop will be about 6 miles and take approximately one hour depending on the average ability level of the attending participants.  Portions of the route will not be suitable for pull behind child carriers.  Please dress appropriately for the weather, bring your own water and bike.  Please meet in front of the Visitor Center.  Program will be cancelled/rescheduled in the event of severely inclement weather.

Tomahawk Throwing Workshop

Discover the unique skill of 18th century tomahawk throwing by joining Ranger Jason Davis for a hands-on tutorial.  Topics will include the versatile applications of the tomahawk on the early American Frontier as well as proper technique and release for throwing with safety and accuracy. No children younger than 12. Parents who wish to be present but not participate do not need to register. Please dress appropriately for the weather.  Bring your own water, all other supplies will be provided. Please don’t bring your own tomahawk unless it is of the 18th century design. This is not a self-defense class. Meet inside Fort Watauga, subject to cancellation due to significantly inclement weather.

Colonial Harvest Celebration

Join the festivities at Fort Watauga as the Washington County Militia gather to celebrate recent victories in the War for Independence and give thanks for a bountiful harvest.  Enjoy demonstrations of 18th century life and living history presentations.

Fall Fiber Show

Fall is the time we plan our winter projects and our handmade holiday gifts!  Spend a day visiting our regions finest fiber producers and artists!  The day will include workshops vendors with handmade items for sale, raw fibers, and demonstrations of spinning, weaving, and more!

Sunday, November 13                      Fall Gnome- Needle Felting Beginners Class          Noon – 3 pm

Cost of class is $55.00 which includes all needed supplies. Please keep in mind that felting needles are sharp when you sign up for the class. 

Watauga Valley Art League – Winterfest Art Show 

November 20th – December 4th

Kick off the holidays at Sycamore Shoals!  The Watauga Valley Art League exhibition and sale begins with a reception on November 20th with great opportunities for holiday shopping!  Artwork from the Watauga Valley Art League will remain on display during regular park hours through December 4.

Walking in Frontier Footsteps – After Thanksgiving Day Hike

Join Park Staff for a special guided interpretive walk through the grounds of Sycamore Shoals and along portions of the walking path on Friday, November 25.  Discover the historical events that took place surrounding Sycamore Shoals and their significance to the formation of our State and Country.  Dress appropriately for the weather as we will be taking a casual stroll on the walking path and through the park grounds.  Portions of the walk will include ground that may not be flat or solid for people with mobility challenges.

Old Time Music Jam – Led by Art Lang

Enjoy the rich musical traditions of our region each month.  Old time musicians of all levels are welcome.  Don’t play and instrument?  Come on over, kick back, and enjoy the tunes!

Fellowship English Country Dancing

Beginners and seasoned dancers alike are all welcome!  The afternoon will include the opportunity to learn dances from different worldwide cultures.  No cost to attend.  Open to anyone, with or without experience or a partner.  Meet in the Visitor Center.  Sponsored by Sabine Hill Social Society.

Spend a candlelit Christmas evening in Tennessee’s oldest frame-house decorated, as it would have been in 1780, with beautiful greenery for the holiday season. Step back in time as you join the Carter family and enjoy learning about the Christmas customs and traditions of our colonial ancestors. Tours begin at 6:00 pm, and a new tour starts every 20 minutes with the last tour beginning at 8:20. The Carter Mansion is located at 1031 Broad Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.  *Please note, the Carter Mansion is only accessible by stairs.

Christmas Reindeer Sewing Class

Student provides fabric, thread & buttons for legs, a sewing machine, basic sewing tools & your lunch.

Overmountain Christmas Open House

Please join us at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park for a festive time of Period Carolers, Christmas Stories, the Watauga Valley Art League’s Annual Winterfest Art Show and more.  There will be a special activity/project the whole family can participate in making and may be making an appearance.  Come do some Christmas shopping at in our new Gift Shop.  Don’t miss out on getting some unique items you can’t find anywhere else!  We look forward to seeing you!

Our Visitors Center is closed on most State holidays.

Park grounds are open from dawn until dusk.
