Watauga Valley Fife & Drum Corps

Saturdays

10:00 am – 12 pm

The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications, and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming!

 

Inkle Weaving

Cost: $60 includes loom (to keep!) & all supplies

$20 thread only

$10 instruction only

Learn how to weave wide sashes, narrow bands, and shoelaces on a loom that is light-weight and easy to carry around! You can create wonderful patterns through varied placement of colorful thread. Bring scissors.

 

The Liberty Spinners

This gathering of spinners and fiber artists is open to anyone interested in the art of spinning. Join us at 9:30 am on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (April to November).

 

Watauga Valley Art League Meeting and Program

Everyone is welcome to join the Watauga Valley Art League for their monthly meetings that feature a guest speakers and fellowship with area artists. WVAL meets the 2nd Sunday of each month, except October.

 

The Gathering at Sycamore Shoals

On Saturday the 17th of September 2016, The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution will celebrate the 236th “Gathering at Sycamore Shoals”. This is a celebration of the Overmountain Men coming together to march to King’s Mountain and defeat Loyalist forces under Col. Patrick Ferguson. We will have a Memorial Service and a wreath laying service. 20th Annual Fort Watauga Knap-In

Saturday & Sunday, September 16 & 17

10 am – 4:00 pm

Knapping –with a “K” – has nothing to do with sleep! Knapping is the art of making stone tools, and the Knap In at Fort Watauga, is our celebration of Tennessee Archaeology Week. Watch primitive skills craftsmen make arrowheads, spear points and other survival tool. There will be demonstrations of primitive tools such as the bow, arrow and atlatl throughout the day.

 

Sabine Hill Social Society welcomes Judy Murray

We are excited to welcome Judy to Sycamore Shoals who has been collecting women’s vintage clothing and textiles for over 30 years. She will be presenting and speaking on these pieces from the late 1800’s through World War II. They will all also be offered for sale during this event. Come and see first-hand the changes in women’s fashion. Light refreshments will be provided.

 

Overmountain Victory Trail Celebration

Overmountain Victory Trail March

Members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association have recreated the historic march to King’s Mountain since 1975. On September 25, marchers will cross the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals, just as the Overmountain militia crossed 236 years ago.

 

Hand Quilting for Beginners

Most quilts are made of 3 layers: the quilt top, the batting, and the back. Quilters call this the “quilt sandwich” and it can be stitched together by hand or by machine. This class will concentrate on quilting the 3 layers by hand. You’ll practice stitching in a straight line as well as following a curve. You won’t take home a finished project, just the record of your practice and the confidence to continue.

 

National Public Lands Day at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area

Fantastic Feathered Friends Festivity!

Celebrate National Public Lands Day at Sycamore Shoals State Park! Join Bryan Stevens of the Lee and Lois Herndon Bird Club for a morning of viewing birds during the migratory season on Saturday, September 30.  Dress appropriately for the weather as we will be taking a casual stroll on the park grounds.  Meet outside in front of the Visitor Center, tour will begin at 8:00 am. Bring your own binoculars, please no pets. Please note that the bathrooms and Visitor Center does not open until 9:00 am. Tour is by reservation only and subject to cancellation due to significantly inclement weather.
