*** COVID-19 GUIDELINES: While visiting the park please stay 6 feet apart from other guests. Face masks are required inside all state park facilities. Face masks are recommended outdoors if social distancing cannot be maintained. Park buildings are subject to closure if maximum capacity is exceeded. The park visitor’s center closes Mon. – Sat. between the hours of 11:30 and 1:30 for cleaning and disinfecting. Restrooms close periodically for cleaning. Please help us stop the spread of COVID-19. Living History Saturdays at Fort Watauga

Each Saturday in September

2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Join our historic interpretive staff for a variety of living history demonstrations, displays, and presentations on various aspects of life in the 18th century frontier. You never know what may be going on at the fort. Come by, check it out, and take a step back in time.

 

Sabine Hill State Historic Site: Guided Tours

Saturdays, September 5 & 19 at 11:30 am

Sundays, September 6 & 20 at 1:30 pm

Cost: Adults – $8.00; Ages 7 to 17 – $4.00; Ages 6 and under Free

Join Seasonal Interpreter Laura Ellis for a guided tour of this stately home which has been described as one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the State of Tennessee. Take in the colorful and architecturally detailed interior while learning about the influential Taylor family who called Sabine Hill home in the early 19th century. Duration – 1 hour.

Please note, Sabine Hill is only accessible by stairs. Only portable toilet facilities are available currently.

 

Carter Mansion: Guided Tours

Saturdays, September 12 & 26 at 11:30 am

Sundays, September 13 & 27 at 1:30 pm

Join Season Interpreter Taylor Moorefield for a tour of Tennessee’s oldest frame house! Discover the secrets of this elegant frontier home and learn the history of the prominent family who built it between 1775 and 1780. Duration – 1 hour.

Please note, the Carter Mansion in only accessible by stairs.

 

Sons of the American Revolution: Gathering at Sycamore Shoals

Saturday, September 12

10:00 am

The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution will commemorate the 240th “Gathering at Sycamore Shoals” in celebration of the Overmountain Men coming together to march to King’s Mountain and defeat Loyalist forces under Col. Patrick Ferguson. Program will be held in the amphitheater located behind Fort Watauga. Public welcome!

Overmountain Militia Muster Candlelight Tours

Friday, September 25

Tours begin at  7:00, 7:15, 7:30, 7:45, 8:00, 8:15, & 8:30 PM

Cost: Adults – $10.00; Ages 7 to 17 years – $5.00; 6 and under free

The year is 1780 and America’s War for Independence is in its 5th year. British Major Patrick Ferguson has threatened to destroy the frontier settlements. In response, the Overmountain Men have gathered at Sycamore Shoals and are forming a frontier army to search out Ferguson and his loyalist force. Experience the sights, sounds, and emotions of the 18th century as you are guided through the historic encampment by lantern light. Meet legendary figures such as Col. John Sevier, Mary Patton, Rev. Samuel Doak, and others as they tell the dramatic story of this historic gathering which led to one of the most decisive victories of the Revolution!

Program begins at the park visitor center. Each tour lasts approximately 1 hour. Please wear appropriate footwear as this is a walking tour. Route is approximately ¼ mile.

Join historical interpreters in and around Fort Watauga as they demonstrate various aspects of 18th century frontier life. Take a step back in time and witness life as it was over two centuries ago.

 

National Public Lands Day Hike / Walking in Frontier Footsteps

Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Museum Curatorial Assistant Chad Bogart for a hike along the banks of the historic and beautiful Watauga River! Learn about the Overmountain Men, their historic gathering at Sycamore Shoals, the campaign to Kings Mountain, and the decisive victory that turned the tide of the American Revolution. Please wear appropriate footwear. Route is approximately ½ mile.

9:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday – Saturday

(closed 11:30 am – 1:30 pm for lunch and cleaning)

 

1:00 PM – 4:30 PM Sunday

 

Our Visitors Center is closed on most State holidays.

Park grounds are open from dawn until dusk.

In the event of extremely inclement winter weather, contact the park about program cancellations and park office closings.
