Fibers Show and Sale

This Weekend! Saturday and Sunday, March 12 & 13

10 am – 4 pm on Saturday and 11 am – 4 pm on Sunday

with the Overmountain Weavers Guild!

The Fibers Show and Sale will feature Guild demonstrations of weaving, spinning, and knitting throughout the weekend.  Guild members and other local fiber artists will have a variety of natural fibers, handspun yarn, handwoven items and knitted products available for sale.  Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and speak with area fiber artists, observe them using fibers to create yarn and apparel, and try their hands at these heritage crafts.

The Overmountain Weavers Guild was founded in 1972 to teach, stimulate, and furnish inspiration, information, and mutual assistance in the growth and development of handweaving, spinning, dyeing, felting, basketry, and related fiber arts. The Guild hosts programs and workshops for members throughout the year and educates the next generation of fiber artists through their beginning and advanced weaving classes every August. The Guild is currently working on a variety of projects including weaving drafts (patterns) from the mid-19th century and growing a garden of plants to make natural dyes.   This event is free and open to the public.

Sunday, March 13 beginning at 12 pm –3:30 pm

Cost of Class: $65.00 – Includes all supplies (2 felting needles, needle holder, finger protectors, skewer, foam felting surface, project template & handout, Core & Topcoat Fiber- enough to complete project and more!

Minimum number of participants:  3    Maximum number:  10

Age restriction: 18+

In this Beginners level class you will be creating a little bird! If you have a special favorite bird, bring a picture!

About the Artist:     Jennifer Hanlon is a multimedia artist with a focus on fiber, especially needle felting. Originally from Western North Carolina, she participated in several shows, galleries, and was secretary of the Blue Ridge Fine Arts Guild for 3 years focusing on 2-dimensional works.  She took a break from crafting after marrying and moving to Vermont for 3 years.  After moving back to the mountains here in Johnson City, TN She has gotten back into crafting and discovered needle felting in 2020.  Needle felting is a great craft that takes patience but is so worth the effort when you see the results. Please join her at Sycamore Shoals!

The Guild meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 10 am at Exchange Place in Kingsport, Tennessee. Overmountain Weavers’ Guild Fiber Fair

Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 10 am – 4 pm

 

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton will come alive once again on Saturday, March 19, 2016 for its annual Fiber Fair.  On that day many of the most talented fiber artists of the region will come together to share their talents and their wares. Weavers will throw their shuttles, spinners will ply their yarns, and botanists will transform tough plant stalks into silky fibers.

Visitors will learn how to change a yarn’s color using natural or Overmountain Weavers Guild Fibers Show2manufactured dyes. They will also be invited to try their hand at a loom or a spinning wheel!  Knitters and crocheters will answer questions and give helpful hints about their craft.

In addition, many area vendors will be selling fine hand-made items throughout the day. Natural yarns, beautiful jewelry, hand-made scarves, house-wares, mittens, goat milk soap and roving will be for sale.

Refreshments are available all day through Powers Coffee – for breakfast, lunch or snacks.

For visitors interested in learning to weave, guild members will offer a chance to sign up for a beginning weaving classes during August 2016. The classes will be held each Saturday and Sunday in August at Exchange Place in Kingsport.  A sign-up sheet will be at the OMWG information desk at the Fiber Festival.

Fiber Fair is sponsored each year by The Overmountain Weavers’ Guild from Kingsport.  The Guild meets monthly at Exchange Place at 10 am the  3rd Wednesday of each month.

It is part of the Guild’s mission to keep alive the time-honored skills of the fiber arts.

Admission is free and all are welcome. Come and enjoy a fun and educational day with the entire family.

Fibers Show & Sales with the Overmountain Weavers

Saturday, March 28 from 10 am to 4 pm

Overmountain Weavers Guild Fibers Show - Fleece to ShawlFiber artists will gather on March 28th at Sycamore Shoals State Park to demonstrate their skills and sell unique handcrafted items during the 12th Annual Overmountain Weavers Guild Fiber Show and Sale. The fiber fair will be open from 10am to 4pm and is a free event for the entire family.

Live alpacas and llamas will be on display, door prizes will be awarded, and delicious food and drink will be available for purchase. Visitors will be able to try their hand at weaving or spinning under the helpful guidance of Guild members.

Demonstrations include weaving on various types of looms, fiber preparation and carding, yarn spinning and Japanese braiding known as Kumihimo. Guild members will answer questions on ???????????????????????????????weaving, spinning, dyeing, using natural fibers, knitting, crocheting, and felting. There will be an opportunity to buy a wide assortment of handmade items including, jewelry, handspun yarn, handwoven items, as well as sheep and alpaca fleeces.

The Fiber Show and Sale is a wonderful way to appreciate weaving, spinning, and fiber art skills that go back hundreds of years, and are still used by fiber artists today.

The Overmountain Weaver’s Guild meets monthly at Exchange Place in Kingsport for weaving skill development and sharing. The guild also participates in various local events and offers a beginner weaving class in August each year.
