Traditional Arts Workshops

Our region is rich in cultural traditions and folkways.  With thanks to a host of talented artists and crafters; and the support of Friends of Sycamore Shoals, we are able to offer a wide variety of Traditional Arts Workshops throughout the calendar year.

We will be loading a link shortly to the 2018 workshops at Sycamore Shoals along with instructions on how to register and hold your spot in these popular classes!

In the interim, our workshops are listed by the month, up through the current month, at “Monthly Interpretive Programs.”

All classes need to be registered and paid for in advance by calling Sycamore Shoals at 423-543-5808.

An Afternoon of early 19th century Dance with the Sabine Hill Social Society         

Sunday, March 25

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Beginners and seasoned dancers alike are all welcome! The afternoon will include English Country Dance and early Appalachian dance techniques.  Registration is not necessary and all are welcome!


Workshop: Watermedia Painting Class          

Instructor: Barbara Jernigan                                                

Saturday, April 21

9:00 am – Noon

Cost: $12 (student brings supplies) or $20 (supplies provided)

Come and paint with watercolors and acrylics on paper! The possibilities are endless.

It may be a landscape, spring flowers, a mountain vista, or maybe even a selfie.

Photo references or tracings will be provided. Paint your own composition or follow along with the instructor. Students with supplies may use watercolors, acrylics or fluid acrylics on paper.

Beyond Beginning – Mountain Dulcimer         

Instructor: Jim Miller

Tuesdays, May 8, 15, & 22

6:30 – 7:30 pm

Cost for 3 weeks: $45.00

Min: 5     Max: 10

Continue your learning on this traditional Appalachian instrument which

covers chords, harmonies, and several intermediate tunes.


Flint Knapping – Making Stone Tools                                                   

Instructors: Bob Estep & Friends

Saturday & Sunday, June 23 & 24

10 am – 4 pm

Cost: $110 (includes flint knapping kit & stone – yours to keep!)

Min: 4  Max: 12

Make stone tools such as the arrow point using only traditional techniques. Please be sure to register no later than 1 week prior to the class. Adults only.
