A Salute to the American Soldier

9 am – 3 pm on Saturday, August 31st at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center

Commemoration of 75th Anniversary of D-Day Landing at Sycamore Shoals State Park

A Walk in Their Boots, a local organization honoring the service and sacrifice of the American Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine, is presenting a living history with numerous presentations about both military and civilian support activities for the American Soldier taking part in “Operation Overlord”. The landings on the beaches of Normandy, France, June 6th, 1944, were an unparalleled world event that you will have an opportunity to learn about. The event is being held at Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton, TN from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 31st (Labor Day weekend).  The event is free and open to the public.

This 75th anniversary commemoration pertaining to the D-Day landings and the June 1944 time period will include period vehicles and weapons, military encampments, re-enactors, living historians and displays covering topics including Stories of Local Veterans, Milligan College V12 Program, Cadet Nurse Corps, Women in Aviation, Local Industries supporting the War Effort and more.  Great photo opportunities will abound along with displays of 1940’s memorabilia and artifacts on site encouraging the public to reflect on how Tri -Cities was impacted by the war effort leading up to the D-Day landing and to share their family stories.
